Clay likely to test the free agent market after new contract fails to materialize

Klay Thompson, 34-year-old forward, appears headed for the free agent market. Negotiations over a new deal with the Golden State Warriors have made no progress, despite Saphanthong head coach Steve Kerr’s desire for him to return, according to Antho’s report. Kerr, head coach of the Warriors, said after the elimination that ‘We want Clay back, I know I speak for everyone in the organization. We want him back. Of course there is business at hand and it needs to be resolved with Clay’s agent for as long as he is. We really want him back.’ But now it looks like his wish won’t come true. 

It’s June and the offseason business begins, but the Warriors and Thompson are still no closer to a contract extension. And now the 34-year-old forward is headed to the free agent market. 

Although the Warriors have a desire to keep Thompson at the right price, But when every aspect of their roster is reconsidered, It has not yet been able to set a time frame for working out a new deal. Meanwhile, the veteran forward is ready to test the free agent market for the first time in his career.

Several franchises are reportedly interested in Thompson, but the 34-year-old forward isn’t just chasing the money. But he also wants a team that can win at the same time. The Orlando Magic have reportedly been interested in Thompson for a long time. Other teams may want to gain experience in the short term, such as the Philadelphia 76ers or the Oklahoma City Thunder, for example.

The Warriors still have some roster issues to deal with before they can extend or re-sign Thompson, as Golden State still needs incoming players. It takes the pressure off Steph Curry, a role Thompson has filled at All-NBA level. 

He’s no longer that player, but Thompson still provides value, averaging 17.9 points and shooting 38.7 percent from 3-point range last season.
