Castro, Williams to play through injuries come playoffs

AYSON Castro and Kelly Williams are both day-to-day situations for TNT going to the team’s PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals series against Rain or Shine.

While the duo came up big for the Tropang Giga in their 98-93 win over Magnolia that officially clinched for them a spot in the playoffs, coach Chot Reyes disclosed the two continue to play through their respective injuries.

Castro, 37, has been dealing with a jumper’s knee injury, while Williams, 42, has a nagging back issue.

Reyes said that’s the case for his two veteran warriors.

“Kelly, he’s always a day to day call. He literally sometimes goes to practice, ready to practice, goes to our warm ups and drills, and then suddenly his back will freeze up and then he’ll ask to sit out,” said the TNT mentor.

“I mean literally. Nangyayari talaga yun. Nakabihis na siya, naka-warm up na siya, nakagayak na, naka-ready na, then suddenly magta-tighten yung likod niya, then he has to sit out.”

Castro is basically on the same boat, according to Reyes.
“Ganun din kay Jayson. He’s ready, and then when we go hard running and sprinting involved, then nararamdaman niya na yung jumper’s knee niya. So we’ll sit him out,” Reyes said.

“And obviously, if they’re not in practice that affects the game and that affects even our rotation. So nag-iiba talaga yung galaw na gusto namin.”

Of course, the health of the two veterans will always be first and foremost for TNT.

“It’s not an excuse. Every team goes through that. It’s part of every competition, any tournament. That’s why we’re hoping we have players ready to step forward and fill in their shoes,” said Reyes.

The no. 4 seed Tropang Giga will face fifth seed Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in a best-of-three series beginning this weekend.

TNT beat Rain or Shine in their lone encounter this conference, 108-107.(RG)
